We cannot nor do we want to escape from God

Psalm 139

7 Where can I go from Your Spirit?

Or where can I flee from Your presence?

8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there;

If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.

9 If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

10 Even there Your hand shall lead me,

And Your right hand shall hold me.

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”

Even the night shall be light about me;

12 Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,

But the night shines as the day;

The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

From Adam and Eve to Jonah to Judas many people have tried to escape the presence of God. There have been times in my life that I wanted to escape God’s all-seeing eye. Even when we think we have clean gotten away with something we know that God saw and that He knows.

In this section David puts all of those thoughts on paper and brings them clearly to our mind. No matter where we go, God is there. No matter how dark the night, God is there. No matter how high we go or how low we go, God is there. There is no place on this created planet that the Creator is not aware of and does not see His creation’s actions. There are no conversations or plans that God does not hear. From the highest to the lowest God sees and hears all for His presence is everywhere.

For the evil-doer this is an inescapable conscience. But for those who are living faithful to

God this is a wonderful comfort and assurance. God is aware of all of our personal and church plans and needs. He is a part of every conversation and is leading us into His perfect will. I look at this passage as a great encouragement. Wherever I go in service of Christ, God is there. Whomever I visit, God is there. I am never alone in His work for He is always everywhere giving me guidance and protection.

“Thank you God for your everywhere presence. Thank you for always being everywhere I need you to be.”

We look forward to our Wednesday night prayer and Bible study this evening. Kids4Truth meets at 7 as does the youth group. This is an important time of the week for us. Start the new year with a new commitment to joining us on Wednesday nights.

Have a great day in the Lord,

All that God knows is unfathomable

Psalm 139

1     O Lord, You have searched me and known me.

2     You know my sitting down and my rising up;

You understand my thought afar off.

3     You comprehend my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted with all my ways.

4     For there is not a word on my tongue,

But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

5     You have hedged me behind and before,

And laid Your hand upon me.

6     Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

It is high, I cannot attain it.

To read and meditate on verses 1-5 will lead us to agree with verse 6.

Imagine that God in heaven knows the sitting down and standing up of all of the billions of people who live on planet earth!  There is not a computer available to store that much information yet God knows it.  He understands the thoughts of every one of the billions of people and He understands their thoughts even before they do.

God knows the path of everyone’s life and when they lie down.  Just the volume of this information is mind boggling.  Furthermore, God is acquainted with all of our ways.   We consider path A or path B and God knows our choices and which one we will choose.

Before we speak, God knows our words.  We ponder our thoughts to bring out the right words and God knows what words we are going to use before they come out of our mouths.  And, God knows this for every one of the billions of people alive!

God hedges our lives, that is, He puts up fences to keep us where He wants us to go.  His plans are being worked out even when we think we are doing what we want to do.  God is in control of His creation and of every created person.  We belong to Him whether we think we do or not and He is in control.  He cares for every person in ever village and in every city and desires for them all to know Him.   Those who hunger after Him, God sends someone to bring them His gospel.

So, verse 6 says,  “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, it is high, I cannot attain unto it.”  We cannot begin to wrap our minds around a God this big, this smart, and this knowledgeable.  But He is and He is our God.

The clock keeps ticking, doesn’t it?  Just three weeks ago we were all planning for Christmas and now it is over.  Several of us were planning a Christmas Eve and a New Year’s Eve service and now they are all in the history books.  I planned to start a new series in January and it is already begun.  I am grateful to God and to all of you who helped and came and made all of our special services special.  They were wonderful times.  Christ was exalted in song and testimony and fellowship and in message.  I do enjoy the Christmas season for the opportunities it brings to exalt Christ so powerfully.

Yesterday was a wonderful day for our church as we gathered around the Lord and His word.  Attendance was good as was the Spirit at work in us and through us.  Continue to pray with us for God to bring us to the place He wants us to be.  Be pliable in His hands as we seek His will.

A friend faces cancer surgery this Thursday and needs financial help.  Pray for God to show Himself mighty.

Jared and Stefani, along with your children, started school today.  After a wonderful time of much family and many friends stopping in, our house is now just us.  We are back on schedule and ready to face the challenges and opportunities of 2016.

Have a great day in the Lord,

Praise, worship, prayer, strength and completion

Psalm 138

1 I will praise You with my whole heart; Before the gods I will sing praises to You.

2 I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

3 In the day when I cried out, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul.

4 All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord, When they hear the words of Your mouth.

5 Yes, they shall sing of the ways of the Lord, For great is the glory of the Lord.

6 Though the Lord is on high, Yet He regards the lowly; But the proud He knows from afar.

7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand Against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me.

8 The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

Praise and worship of God are to be the key actions of our lives. We worship something every day for every day we give something our full attention and devotion. Something is so important to us that it gains our money, our time, and our energy. We look up to people for all kinds of accomplishments. We look to things made by man and give those things value and importance. Then we go to church and give praise to God and worship Him. Let us make sure that all of those other people and things are just things we enjoy while reserving our worship for God and for Him alone.

God’s word is and always has been of great value. Here we read that God magnifies His word above His name. Yes, we love the name of God and at the name of Jesus many things have and will take place. But God magnifies His word above His name. If we are going to know God we need to know more than His name and His word teaches us of the person behind the name. Do not fall into the cultic practice of repeating the name of Jesus but learn of the Christ behind the name and worship Him.

The Lord gives us strength when we cry out to Him and then He gives us boldness and strength of soul. Your soul is behind all that you do so strength and boldness of soul is what we need at all times. Seek the Lord for strength and boldness of your soul.

God revives us, perfects His work in us and will not forsake us. I find great encouragement in these thoughts. Spend some time in Psalm 138 and you too will be strengthened in your soul.

Last night was a wonderful time of fun, food and fellowship around God’s word. What a great place to be and what great people to be with. What does God have for us in 2016? He wants us to finish the work that He has laid out for us. His work has to do with praying for people, caring for people, sharing the gospel with people, giving our ourselves to disciple others, and committing to His word and His Spirit in our lives. I am ready to do the work of the Lord one more year. Come with me.

Tomorrow morning at 7:30 any men who want to join us for breakfast and prayer meet us at Denny’s.

Sunday morning our teens and adults will be meeting together for Sunday school in the auditorium as there is only one room downstairs for kids Sunday school.

There is no dinner after church this Sunday so do not bring food for it.

Have a great day in the Lord, and Happy New Year,
