15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
No one wants their dirty laundry hung out in public. Jesus broke the rules of decorum by hitting the woman where no one was supposed to be hit. Society has always wanted their sin hidden. Sinful people have hidden behind many veils always putting their best foot forward while hiding their sin. Remember Hester Prynne of the Scarlet Letter? While she was being exposed for her adultery the pastor was hiding behind the white collar.
What have you hidden your sin behind? I have been guilty of hiding behind the worse sins of someone else. By comparison I wasn’t as bad as that other guy so my sin wasn’t much to worry about. One of my sons hid behind his own view of his sin. He wasn’t really doing anything wrong in that he wasn’t hurting anyone else. Whenever we are called face to face with our true sin we don’t like the confrontation. The woman at the well changed the subject when Jesus hit her with her true sin.
Before we can honestly help anyone else, we need to confess and forsake our own sin. To hide sin, the Bible says, will keep us from enjoying the prosperity of God. When we come to the Lord’s Table we are called to confess our sin and to come to the Table reconciled to God and to man.
If Jesus confronted you today, what would He uncover in your life? What would He bring to the surface that you have been trying to keep hidden? David prayed these words; perhaps we should pray them today: “Search me, Oh God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.”
It feels like our country is imploding. The homosexual community has commanded control, through fear, of entire state legislatures and governor’s pens. Social media has the power to destroy the reputation of an honest man. Tennessee wants to make the Bible their State book and is being faced with great attacks for doing so. Military ships in the seas off of Iran are intercepting rifles, grenade launchers, and 50 caliber machine guns. Secrets are being kept to protect the rich from paying taxes. And on and on it goes. America is beginning to act by mob rule which is the opposite of the rule of law.
Do you pray for our nation and for our world? Only the intervention of God can make a difference. I fear most for the freedom of religion. Ultimately that too will be eroded. We love meeting in public without fear of being reprimanded or arrested. Satan hates this freedom and his goal is to remove it. Pray for our freedom to worship God and to send out missionaries around the world.
Have a great day in the Lord, PS
