How effective is the Gospel?

John 4

39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word.

42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

When we think of John chapter 4 we think of the woman at the well.  While Jesus did go there to meet her, He also went there for all of the people of Samaria.  He had to get past the hopeless woman who had married and divorced five times and then gave up on marriage.  Once past her, the entire city opened up to Him.  Jesus went to Samaria for a harvest of souls and that is exactly what He got.

Note a couple of points with me.  First of all, the Jews and the Samaritans had a feud going.  There was great prejudice between them as the Samaritans had been purposefully inbred by Gentile soldiers so they were all half-breed Jews.  As half-breeds, they were “lesser” in the eyes of the pure-bred Jews.  This prejudice went deep into the fabric of society.  Jesus pushed that all aside to care for the souls of the people He loved.  Whenever the Lord leads you to share His gospel, look past all of your prejudices and care for the souls of the people He is leading you to love.

A second point is that when the Lord saw a harvest He willingly changed His schedule to labor in that harvest.  We know that Jesus and the disciples stopped at a city well and that the disciples went into the city to buy food.  But were you aware that they all spent two more days there? They would have had to buy more food and lodging in order to stay.  Wherever they were supposed to be was going to have to wait at least two more days.  Jesus was willing to change the course of His future plans and the plans of those travelling with Him to stop and give the gospel to people He loved.

Are we willing to lay aside prejudice and schedule to share the effective gospel of God?  When we are willing God is going to give us opportunity.  When God gives us opportunity and we take it then those who hear will know and will come to believe that Jesus is the Christ and is the Savior of the world.

Thank you for a great Sunday together.  Our study of Isaiah 55 is proving to be a rich study.  As we looked at God’s desire to be near us, to be present with us, we were challenged to seek Him while He may be found and to call upon Him while He is near.  What a great time we had realizing that God has done all that He has done because He wants to be near to us; God wants us in His presence.  Enjoy being in God’s presence this week.

I will be speaking this morning at Sunrise Assisted Living.  Pray for that opportunity to open God’s word to those dear people.

This evening I will be meeting with a life-long friend who has recently endured a trial.  Pray for God’s wisdom for our time together.

Have a great day in the Lord,

PS
