Do we “see” Jesus as God

John 8

14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me. 17 It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.”

19 Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?”

Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”

In our cinematic age we have watched several men play “Jesus” in different movies.  I remember one portrayal that had Jesus laughing a lot.  Isaiah’s description of the Christ as a “man of sorrows” made me wonder if Christ enjoyed life as much as this actor portrayed.  I have seen passion plays and the “Passion of the Christ” movie where Jesus was portrayed very serious, very intense.  When I was younger all of the Jesus actors had long, really long hair but in 1 Corinthians it said that if a man had long hair it was a shame unto him so I wondered if those portrayals could be right.  (Did any of you have these conflicting thoughts when you watched screen adaptations of the Lord Jesus?)  Then there were the presentations of Christ where they found the most handsome actor they could whose body was ripped with muscles and used him as Jesus.  Again, that is not how Isaiah said it would be.

One aspect of Christ that I don’t remember being emphasized on screen was His equality with the Father.  Jesus and God were equals, they are one.  Christ, in His humanity, did not put aside His divinity.  He was the enfleshment of God, God in the flesh, God incarnate.  He did all the amazing things that He did because he was God.  Both Peter and Paul did amazing miracles but later in life they were not able to do the same miracles.  Jesus was able all the way to the end of His stay on earth.  Divinity did not come on Him and leave Him for Jesus was God from birth to death.

Why does this matter?  If we perceive Jesus as seen on TV and in the movies we are not going to see Him in the fullness of who He is.  If we perceive Jesus as less than fully God then we are not going to entrust Him with our entire lives and eternity.  God did not want any images made of Him lest people would worship Him for less than He was for no image can depict God accurately.  Thus, no actor can portray Christ fully.  If we see the actor we are not seeing Christ.

The Lord Jesus repeatedly defended His equality with God.  Christ wants us to know that He and God are one and that we can therefore trust the Lord Jesus, who saves and indwells us, with our entire lives, i.e. our minds, our wills, our emotions, our present, our past and our future.  Since Jesus is God in fullness He is able to save and to keep.  When we pray to God in Christ we are praying to the sovereign God of all creation and of all time and space.  We are praying to God!  When we worship Jesus Christ we are worshipping God!  Hallelujah! What a Savior.

Whew, what a week this has been!  A good week of ministry and a very full week of ministry.  We asked God to open doors of opportunity and He surely has.  I look forward to hear how God has opened doors of opportunity for you.

Sunday is our dinner day.  Plan to come and join us for lunch after the morning service.  Before lunch there is a mandatory VBS meeting for all workers.  We are one week away and need to make sure that all loose ends are going to be tied up.  I will be going out passing out flyers for a while after lunch.  If anyone wants to join me bring walking shoes.

The VBS yard signs came in late yesterday.  I will be bringing them by your houses later today.  I could use some help tomorrow afternoon getting the church yard sign painted and put together.  If you can come lend a hand please let me know.

Bobbi will be at the church tomorrow getting the auditorium decorated.  There are still props to paint and cut so if you can help come in the morning around 9:00.

Most of all, pray for God to send us children and parents.   The more we can get the better it will be for the more that will hear the Gospel, the good news unto salvation.

Have a great day in the Lord,
PS
