27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.
31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”
33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
Headed toward the crucifixion and the wrath of the Father for the sin of the world, Jesus was troubled. Yet, His troubled spirit did not lead Christ to change His mind. Instead, the Father sent His voice to comfort the Son and to confirm His purposes to the crowd.
I am so often amazed at all that God does to confirm Himself to us. He reveals Himself in the Bible, in nature, in humanity, and more. Here God revealed Himself through His spoken voice. Jesus, from this revelation, went into a short discourse on the coming defeat of satan, the ruler of this world. Jesus, on the other hand, was going to be lifted up and in His lifted up position would draw all people to Himself. Thus, the Lord Jesus pressed forward to complete the Father’s will.
So Jesus, knowing that He was going to be crucified and face the Father’s wrath for our sin, taught that in doing so He would draw all people to Himself. Most religious leaders proclaim their own goodness or exalt themselves. Jesus went to a cross. Men start religions; Jesus opened up the possibility for a renewed relationship with God. As gory as the Lord’s death was, we speak of it in terms of endearment and thanksgiving for surely, on the Cross, the Lord has drawn us all to Himself.
It has been my life goal to lift up Jesus. In lifting up the Savior people are drawn to Him. Some people have personality ministries but I want people to be drawn the Christ. It is eternity with Him that we desire and it is the Cross that is the bridge enabling us to get to God.
“Thank you, Lord Jesus, for not backing down but for going all the way to the Cross for me. You have drawn me to Yourself and I have come to You.”
